Kick-start your heart and become alive
Kick-start your heart and become alive involves picking a rock song that gives you passion and courage to jump outside your comfort zone and experience more. We all need a song that motivates us to be our best and sing it every day. Doing so will put you in an emotional and physical state that ensures you make the right decisions and take the actions necessary to design the life and business you love.
It was a few years ago when I first started thinking about a rock song that represented the person I needed to become and the life I wanted to live. I wanted a song that really motivated me and would push me to experience more. I can vividly play that day back in my mind, feeling the relentless and overwhelming need to accelerate my actions to create the income, lifestyle and freedom I wanted.

My theme song for life was the Hokey Pokey
I was at a wedding. After dinner, they were playing songs for a kids dance – the Hokey Pokey. “’You put your left foot in, you put your left foot out, you put your left foot in and shake it all about; you do the hokey pokey, and you turn yourself around, and that’s what it’s all about!” And then you do the whole thing again with your right foot, then your left hand, and on and on until you are bored.
For some reason, listening to that song made me realize my life and work had become the Hokey Pokey. It was the unconscious anthem for my life at this point – a bunch of dull, repetitive, unfulfilling, mechanical motions that led me into a life of mediocrity. I was horrified to think that, of all songs, THIS boring kid’s song was the one that captured the essence of my passion and accomplishments in life. It’s a great song for kids, but a terrible theme song for an adult that should be living full on.
“The future depends on what we do in the present.” – Mahatma Ghandi, activist
I was not a good role model by living a small life
I realized I was not the role model I wanted to be for my children. There was a massive disconnect between what I would say to them and the actions I took. I would often tell them: “You guys can do and become anything that you want.” I was hypocritical in saying it because I was not living it. I had become a middle-aged man under-achiever based on what I truly wanted.
At the same time, I knew it was not too late, that there was still a chance to play the game of life at another level. I got motivated to leave a legacy for my children and make sure that when I say “you can do and be anything you want”, I was a good reference point and great role model for that philosophy.
“A compelling future is the food on which our souls thrive. We all need a continuing sense of emotional and spiritual growth.” – Anthony Robbins, Personal Mastery teacher
It was time to Kick-start my heart
No more Hokey Pokey for me – I had to up my game and my standards. I call this raising the BAR: Beliefs, Actions, and Results. I needed a theme song to represent my new BAR. I eventually chose the rock song by the power group Motley Crue. For those that don’t know… the story of the rock’n roll band Motley Crue’s song “Kickstart My Heart,” is apparently inspired by Nikki Sixx’s heroin overdose in the ’80s in which he was declared legally dead, but eventually brought back to life. The story is about a friend who found Sixx lying dead on the floor, and rolled him into the shower, put cold water on him and then started slapping him in the face. Soon thereafter, the paramedics came in and they grabbed Sixx out of the shower like a rag doll, dropped him in the living room and they pumped his chest with their hands. And he was revived – getting a second chance to live. The song also deals with the band’s newfound sobriety during the songwriting process and on stage. The rush they used to get from drugs, they were now getting in other, more natural ways.
The lesson of the song is similar to the story of ourselves. Many of us overdose on fear and limiting beliefs, causing us to die inside even before our biological time is up. In essence we become the “living dead”, we stop dreaming, we stop growing, we stop taking chances, we stop jumping out of our comfort zone, we stop shooting for the stars (going for what we want).
And sometimes we need some help from a friend or a song to slap us out of our coma/paralysis/mundane life, to KICKSTART OUR HEART & BECOME ALIVE AGAIN. We need to use this second chance, and fully embrace life, (the good, the bad and the ugly). We need to wake up, shake up and bake up (get fired up) to take full advantage of this wonderful opportunity – the gift of life, and become the best version of ourselves and experience more.
“Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.” – Samuel Ullman, businessman, poet, humanitarian, and religious leader
If no one tells you that you’re crazy, you’re not doing enough or taking enough chances in life
Remember, if no one tells you that you’re crazy, you’re not doing enough or taking enough chances. With my new found heart and desire for more… I have literally walked on fire, over an 8-foot bed of red-hot burning coals to prove to myself I am so much more than what I believed at the time. Doing the fire walk meant I had to kick-start my heart and harness internal emotions and beliefs I had never experienced to accomplish something I feared and never felt possible. Once achieved, I had a huge sense of accomplishment and certainty I could do anything – create the life and business I love.
I fully believe I am a firewalker; that has become a metaphor for me and my life. I even wear a wristband that says ‘firewalker’ to bring forward the memory of what it takes to achieve something great. This wristband reminds me daily to kick-start my heart – get fired up, harness the courage to jump out of my comfort zone and look for fresh opportunities. I stand on my growing edge of life, and go for it.
Life is a series of becoming… by transcending fears and taking action. Every day for the past three years, I have consistently taken more risk – and more action – and live by my new theme song, Kick Start My Heart. I’m alive and fired up on a quest to create the income, lifestyle, and freedom I want – nothing is bigger than me in my life so nothing will stop me from achieving my vision.
