Success is like growing a bamboo tree
Success is like growing a bamboo tree. That’s because success is a gradual process. It requires tremendous patience, persistence and positivity; and so does growing a bamboo tree. But most people lack these three critical characteristics for success… and because of that, they quit even before they really get started.
You’ve likely heard the famous quote, “SHOW ME THE MONEY!” from the hit movie Gerry McGuire. This phrase and the mindset that comes with it continues to be adopted more and more to this day. That’s because we live in an instant gratification society – people feel entitled and expect faster results and success even when they have not done anything to earn them.
To break into your best life and create the income, lifestyle and freedom you want, you must understand that progress takes effort and time. Success is a gradual process; nothing happens overnight without a lot of preparation, hard work and commitment.
“Everything comes to him who hustles while he waits.” – Thomas Edison, inventor
How achieving success is like growing a Chinese bamboo tree
Successfully breaking into your best life is similar to the way a bamboo tree grows – very gradual. Your positive belief in who you are and what is possible is like the roots of a tree. Your knowledge, strategies, and action are like the stem, the branches and the leaves. However, you can’t produce the stem, the branches, and the leaves if the root system is unhealthy.
1. Planting the right seeds/beliefs is the first step to growth
Success begins with positive beliefs to ensure there are no weeds (limiting beliefs) creeping in the soil (of your mind) that prevent the roots (the foundation for a positive mindset) from taking hold by choking the growth of the tree (your potential). It is vital to nourish the ground/mind within which the roots are sitting, and make sure the beliefs that everything rests on are positive and stable and will provide the strong foundation for your best life.
2. Weeding the garden and cultivating the soil to nurture the root system is critical
For example, once you plant the seed of a bamboo tree, for the next three years, your focus is on the root (foundation) system by watering, cultivating and nurturing the soil. Be sure to weed your mental garden daily to get rid of the limiting beliefs creeping in. You need faith in your efforts to progress because you can’t see any growth or results below the surface. In the unseen, the root system is growing, developing the foundation for results, in silence and without obvious achievement.
3. Be patient, persistent and positive, and let the foundation work its magic
After three years of effort and work… suddenly, the bamboo tree shoots up 60 to 90 feet tall, a fully-grown testament to the powers of patience and persistence.
Once you plant seeds for your own success using personal development strategies, you set in motion a root-growing process that will serve you for the rest of your life. Your roots support your positive mindset which, in turn, helps your decision-making skills.
You may not see growth in the early stages but, when you maintain course and keep applying the right amount of cultivation (positive beliefs) and consistently tend the soil to get rid of weeds (negative beliefs), you will see surprising growth in right timing. With small gradual improvements to your mindset, you will be able to take more action every day, which naturally results in your life getting better and more abundant.

You can play the game of life safe and live with regret, or you take a chance and design the life and business you love
Remember – you can play it safe, stay in a mundane job that lacks fulfillment and risk potentially living in pain and regret, or you can take the chance to find the edges of your true potential, purpose, and freedom. My opinion is to not let fear and limiting beliefs make your decision.
Each of us has expenses and, regardless of the size of income, there will always be bills and unexpected expenses. This major chokehold instills fear and inaction. Whether you stay where you are or you take the chance, there will be bills to pay. So don’t stir up fear that you’ll ruin your life if you quit your job. Even if you have a job (“just over broke”), you are likely living paycheck to paycheck with the illusion of security. It’s just not a great life, in my opinion.
“Many of us spend half our time wishing for things we could have if we didn’t spend half our time wishing.” – Alexander Woolcott, critic and commentator for The New Yorker magazine
Take action now and start building momentum
Breaking into your best life also requires momentum. It’s like riding a bicycle – you won’t make much progress toward your destination by sitting in one spot or barely moving. Without momentum, you become wobbly, lose confidence, and fall. But, with strong forward motion, you gain confidence, power, and energy, and begin to move in the direction you choose. Let your passion pull you to where you want to go. It’s little bits of growth, the small steps forward, that make me go, “Oh yeah! I just accomplished that. I just learned that. Geez, that was incredible.” The low-hanging fruit give quick wins and feel amazing – they add booster fuel to my motivation.
I have both bad and good days. However, as long as I have more good than bad days, push my growth, move toward a goal – that’s what matters. The small steps forward are what juices me. They give me the momentum to wake up early with excitement and go to bed late with enthusiasm and keep taking action.
Always push for success, but make sure live in the moment and enjoy the now
Although I desired and pushed for a better future, I knew I also needed to be present and enjoy now. Happiness will never come to you; you have to create it. You can still live an ideal day each day by using your abilities to be present, grateful, happy and giving. Work on your mindfulness and experience the many life gifts you have right in front of you, and enjoy the emotions they elicit. Live with gratitude for all life experiences and circumstances for they are there to guide you and teach you how to become more. Remember to have fun and laugh as you undertake this life adventure.
“People are just about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”– Abraham Lincoln, former President of the USA
