Assessing your personal characteristics

Desire and interest aren’t all it takes to be successful. You must also assess your personality traits, abilities and knowledge without bias. That you must be positive goes without saying. In addition, you must possess a number of other human relations skills as being cooperative, tactful, emotionally stable and considerate. Your ability to communicate well will be evidenced by your ability to sell effectively, negotiate good deals with suppliers, motivate employees to work efficiently and persuade bankers and investors to finance your business. Creative analytical thinking combined with a thorough technical knowledge of your business is essential in making your enterprise grow. And finally, the drive to put your dreams into action and the energy to persist is essential for your business success. If you aren’t cut out to be an entrepreneur, it is better to find out now rather than later and lose your money.

Being an entrepreneur places great demand on you personally. Having a good idea for a product or service is one thing; making it into a viable business is quite another. Do you have the necessary qualities?

DIRECTIONS: Ask yourself the following questions. Answer them honestly, grading yourself from 0 points (a definite “no”) to 10 points (a very strong “yes”).

Are you a leader? Do people naturally look to you for decisions...follow you easily? Or do you have difficulty getting people to do what you want? Are you the sort who would rather let someone else get things going?

Are you good at making decisions? Do you consider yourself decisive...your decisions generally sound? Do you tend to take a long-time making decisions or get flustered under pressure? Are you happier to let others make the decisions? Do others turn to you for help in making decisions?

Are you a self-starter? Are you always on the lookout for new ideas? Don’t need nudging to get going? Or do you find it hard to get down to difficult tasks? Do you always need a push from someone else to get you started?

Are you good with people? Do you enjoy working with others? Or do you have problems relating to those who have different ideas from your own? Are you really a loner?

Can you take responsibility? Do you like taking charge? Or would you rather someone else did it? Would you want someone else to take charge at all costs?

Are you a good organizer? Do you plan everything? Keep lists? Set priorities? Or do you get bothered when there are several problems to cope with at once? Or do you take things as they come... prefer not to plan ahead?

Are you hard working? Do you work long hours...don’t let up till the job’s done? Or is enough, enough? In fact, would you rather enjoy the good things in life and let others do the work?

Can people trust your word? Are you as good as your word...never say things you don’t mean? Or do you find it easier to keep people happy by not telling them the truth? In fact, do you believe that the truth can get you into trouble, that it’s better to say whatever will get people off your back?

Do you have willpower and self-discipline? Once you’ve made up your mind to do something, do you stick with it? Or do you sometimes have trouble finishing what you started? If something is not going well, would you prefer to try something else right away?

Is your health good? Do you have the physical stamina to handle the workload? Do you have the emotional strength to withstand the strain? Are you in excellent shape, never run down? Do you get tired out by the end of the week? Have you been sick recently...unable to keep up with others... taking a lot of time off?

If your total score is higher than 60, you may well have what it takes to be an entrepreneur. And should consider jumping right into the coaching and training available … and begin to prepare, launch and grow your own hyper profitable online business. But watch any area where you scored less than five. Is there something you can do to improve yourself in that area? Can you develop some further foundational skill, or get a partner or a key employee or a part time adviser who can complement you in areas where you are weak?
