Your purpose in life is to find your purpose
Your purpose in life is to find your purpose. The biggest barrier for people in finding their purpose, their best life, is that they are stuck on autopilot – spinning their wheels in a dead-end job, in a mundane life, and going nowhere fast. Spinning your wheels fast on one spot for too long will get you stuck in a rut you can’t get out of. You lose the ability to know what you want, and the confidence to act even if you did know. In essence, many people fall asleep at the wheel of their own life.
“Really it comes down to your philosophy. Do you want to play it safe and be good, or do you want to take a chance and be great?” – Jimmy Johnson, professional NASCAR racer
Why are so many people dissatisfied with their career, but do nothing to change?
Look around you as you travel to work tomorrow morning. You’ll notice how fast people are moving, but nobody looks excited for the workday ahead. If you engage in a conversation with someone, you’ll likely hear them complain about something – maybe their job, their boss, or their long hours they work.
Why are so many people dissatisfied with their career, job or working life? And if they are so unhappy, why do they stay and not change?
I would submit it’s because humans tend to react to the environment vs. consciously designing it. The consequence is living in reaction to personal crisis, economic woes, and the fast-changing world of technology vs. actively creating desired results. As a result, we miss out on many opportunities available to us, we are more vulnerable to being left behind in a fast-paced digital economy, and ultimately risk the chance of never finding our purpose.
“The road to success is dotted with many tempting parking spaces.” – Will Rogers, actor and humorist
Our reaction to personal change is similar to our reaction to climate change
Our reaction to life circumstances and desires can be similar to the human species’ response to climate change. For example, climate change wasn’t something clearly noticeable year over year. As a result of our slow awareness and even slower action, climate problems have increased tremendously. Now, “all of a sudden”, we are in the hottest years and greatest storms ever recorded on the planet. The entire human race is at risk if we continue to keep our collective head in the sand, stay on the same path and don’t change. We need to wake up immediately to the fact that climate change is real and we need to do something about it.
The same concept applies to the direction of our lives. When we are in a deep sleep, we don’t notice, see, hear, feel or appreciate what is going on around us. We don’t acknowledge what we do – or don’t – want in our lives, nor how we can make improvements to change our direction. As a result, we cannot see, much less be prepared for, all the opportunities right in front of us.
“Many a false step was made standing still.” – Fortune Cookie
Wake up and realize what you don’t want as well as what you do want
As I’ve already shared, my first awakening happened when I realized what I didn’t want in my life anymore. I hit the threshold when I knew the work I was doing didn’t matter to my clients or my co-workers. My efforts had become busy work to fill time. Motivation dies when activity is mistaken for achievement. I lost any desire to excel in my career and found myself losing interest in my job duties. It was difficult to invest any amount of time or effort in professional pursuits that obviously didn’t make a difference.
I had no idea what the future held for me in my organization. It was like a storm was clouding my vision to a point where I couldn’t see myself. I could only picture myself somewhere else, designing the life and business I love. Instead of assuring me that years of excellent work would bring me growth, my job brought only a constant state of uncertainty and despair. It was hard to work well with the fear of job loss over my head, and without any protection to prevent it. I had lost my passion and felt hopeless and on-edge all the time.
At that moment, psychologically, I was in full crisis mode. I questioned what I was doing and why about the real value I provided – all of which diluted my sense of worth. I stopped feeling challenged to grow so I stopped growing. I allowed others to manage my career and control my destiny. I felt as though I was drifting in a swirl of corporate despair, neglected by my superiors and struggling to make myself relevant. I became emotionally paralyzed, and my life felt stuck. The frustration mounted, and I felt like I was losing bits and pieces of myself while my life wasted away. If I didn’t wake up soon and put some stakes in the ground by figuring out exactly what I wanted and what I was going to do about it, I would be on a path of reaction and pain for a lifetime. There is incredible power when you finally wake up and smell the proverbial coffee.
Here are a few questions to help WAKE UP and kick-start the process to find your purpose: How would you feel if you woke up tomorrow and knew exactly what you wanted for your life? How would that change what you are doing every day? What new decisions and actions would you take to be more empowered and in control? What kind of breakthrough could you have when you focus on designing the life and business you love? If you took progressive action accordingly every day for the next year, where could you be then?
It’s time to wake up, stick your neck out, take notice of what you want, and go get it.
